BRIEF ON
INITIATIVES OF CHANGE – INDONESIA PROGRAMS
A. What initiatives/projects are you involved in that you want to develop in your region, particularly those which have potential beyond your present capacity and could benefit from more people?
So far, we have been carrying several projects under umbrella of Team Initiatives of Change Indonesia. They are:
1. Youth Camp
This camp is intended to introduce IofC ideas and to connect the local Indonesian youths to the International IofC community, particularly those from other parts of Asia. This is an annual programmed event. Youth training camps have already been held five times with different themes; Youth Camp; Action for Change (2003), Youth Camp; Short Life Matters Course (2004), Youth Camp for Peace (2005, Youth Camp; Change Starts with Me (2006), Youth Camp; Discovering Inner Power (2007).These camps attended by about 40 young people, mostly students from different Universities all over Indonesia, including some guest participants/trainers from Australia, Malaysia, Cambodia and Japan.
2. Leadership Training for teenagers.
In the past few years several of these programmes have been run in schools and pesantren (Islamic Boarding School) normally for half a day, using songs and interactive workshops. This programme is intended to follow up our visit in schools or pesantren through training and spreading the ideas of IofC among teenagers.
3. International Youth Forum.
This idea comes up from an anxious from our team, seeing and reflecting to the world issues after the tragedy of 9/11 2001. Seemingly there is an unfair stereotype on Islam that trying to run off whether Islam is as the peace religion or conflict. We saw quiet a lot people around the world that does not really know about Islam. So, at this forum is a time to share, learn, and give a challenge for youth to take part on the process of peace that lead to peaceful world. International Youth Forum, The Role of Youth; Action on Millennium Development Goal toward a World Peace, is on the process of preparation and it will happen on 22 – 30 June, 2008.
B. What initiatives do you feel need to be undertaken, addressing issues where IofC could make a difference?
1. Multi Faith Corner.
It is a place of sharing and experiencing the spirituality beyond own faith. Here, we expect to enrich understanding other faith in order to be more sensitive and aware with faith issues. We have built a close and good relationship with youth coming from different background such as Christian, Confucian, and Buddhist. They are friends of IofC friends to whom we share and work together.
2. LO/Learning Organization.
This is a kind of workshop that focuses on understanding system thinking that uses some tools created by Peter Senge. We had done three times from April up to June 2007 facilitated by Sheila Damodaran. She is Singaporean attended on the last 12th APYC in Puncak Bogor 2006. It was meaningful and giving a great impact to our team in term of learning and empowering human resources. We took three cases for this workshop; Natural Disaster, corruption, and IofC Team Indonesia for the future. By learning this we are on the track to understand the countries problem, now we still have a conference online among Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia led by Sheila to discuss about corruption.
3. Family workshop.
After analyzing and deep reflecting on the human problems, family issues are one of the biggest issues that always influence to the relationships with others. We do believe that to create good relationship with others should start from the small community in a family. A bad relationship in the community generally is the reflection of bad relationship at the family. Our team thinks that we are keen to foster a good foundation and strong relationship through family workshop as the icon to make a difference. We want to invite Renjou (Iofc Taiwan) or other friends who can facilitate and give us the family workshop.
3. Indonesia I care.
This is a one step that we are trying to do in our country. After we have an enough care to our self, family, friends, and community, we want to develop more and increase the care to this nation. It will be like a national campaign to awaken a consciousness of Indonesians to care and pay attention to the earth that we live on. This will be campaign to CARE and SHARE among people. Road show to different University and organization in Jakarta is the planning.
C. What experience of achieving growth with project and teams can offer from your region which may be of help others?
The growth experience that we fell is broadening our mind and friendship beyond ethnicity, faith, culture, and countries. We are open to other people and work together without suspicious for better relationships and world as human being that live on the same earth and sky. We started doing this experience from Students University.
D. Consider who feels called to be actively involved in the development of IofC in the coming 5-10 years, reckoning to commit to one of these initiatives in some definite, sustained way – whether an existing program, or some yet to be defined?
We have been planning to carry these initiatives up to 2012 and as well as considered to see the people of our team IofC Indonesia that can keep running this agenda. Shortly, in our team can be classified in three categories; senior people, working young professional and students group. At this kind of this group, we eliminate into two groups: core team and support team. Core team is a group of people who are committed to give their time to involve with IofC (Umam, Huda, Wazin, and Awen). Support team (Arif, Husnul, Lusiana, Erwan/Ochay, Mulki, Irna, Uul, Veny, Indra) is group of people who are committed to support core team in term of running IofC work and do an incidental project. Aside of the both term, we called as IofC friends. We will have two young potential leaders are going to participate next Action for Life 4 (Huda and Lusiana). Unfortunately, they can not come this special meeting because of their works in Jakarta. Yet, I am personally as one of the core team Initiatives of Change Indonesia will share and discuss the minute of the meeting from special global consultation.
The Iofc team here is mostly from students of State Islamic University Jakarta, the biggest Islamic University in Jakarta, time to time we spread to different university in Jakarta, like Christian University, University of Indonesia, Jakarta State University etc. in the coming year we would like to do partnership with young people organization, government, and other people to give CARE to Indonesia.
The team here needs leadership training to strengthen the Iofc either as a community (family workshop, Learning organization, and any training/conference/workshop held by Iofc) or organization (management, communication, finance, information, and team building).
We also would like to have a partnership/collaboration within Iofc team especially south East Asia. So far we have “Indonesia – Netherlands friendship for the future and anti corruption network (Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore). Partnership with Malaysia and Australia will be a challenge to make a good neighbor.
We will be happy to welcome all of you to come to Indonesia, either for visit, meeting with us, learning and sharing together.
